James Vernon Brooks, known fondly as Vernon, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, at Maury Regional Medical Center at the age of 93. Born on January 26, 1932, to the late Joe D. Brooks and Katherine Crowder Brooks, Vernon dedicated his life to education, community service, and faith.
A lifelong advocate for education, he served as the principal of Riverside Elementary, vice chair on the Maury County Board of Education, and held numerous leadership roles, including President of the Maury County O.T.A. Council, Chairman of the Maury County Principal Association, President of the Maury County Education Association, and President of the Maury County Retired Teachers. His commitment to the betterment of students and educators alike left an indelible mark on his community.
Beyond education, Vernon was awarded the Long Rifle Award for Boy Scouts of America, President of the Mount Pleasant Civilian Club, and Chairman of the Maury County Senior Citizens. He also served his country with honor as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. His dedication to public service extended into local government as a District 10 County Commissioner.
A man of strong faith, Vernon was a devoted member of Beech Hill Church of Christ, where he first served as a Deacon before later becoming an Elder. His guidance and unwavering faith were a cornerstone of the congregation.
Vernon is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Joan Brooks; his sons, Stephen (Lori) Brooks and Christopher (Kim) Brooks; his cherished grandchildren, Ashlie Brooks (Chris) Mustoe, Jordan Brooks, Taylor Brooks, Rachel Brooks, Logan (Mari) Brooks, and Daniel Brooks; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Jerry Brooks Hiner and sister in law: Louise Brooks, wife of Pete Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Bill Brooks, J.D. Brooks, Pete Brooks, and Ellen Brooks Anderson.
Pallbearers: Jordan Brooks, Logan Brooks, Daniel Brooks, Jeffrey Brooks, Waverly Jackson, Barry Brooks.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Beech Hill Church of Christ.
Vernon Brooks was a man of unwavering dedication—to his family, his faith, his students, and his community. His legacy of service, leadership, and love will be remembered for generations to come.
A service for Vernon will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 3, 2025 from 11:00 AM to the start of the service at Williams Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. Vernon will be laid to rest at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbia, Tennessee.
