Hurley C. Young

June 17, 1934 — February 24, 2003

Mr. Hurley Clyde Young, resident of Antrim Circle, Columbia passed from this life on February 24, 2003, at Alive Hospice, Nashville after an illness of a few months.

Services will be Friday, February 28th at 1:00 PM at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 405 Church Street. His body will lie in state Thursday, February 27th at Williams Columbia Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

He was born on June 17, 1934 in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee to the late Hurley and Elizabeth Wright Young. He was educated in the Maury County School system, graduating from Clark Training School in Mt. Pleasant when he was 15 years old.

Hurley was a faithful member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church where he served as Head Trustee. He was also president of the Men's Chorus, encouraging the men to "Make a joyful noise to the Lord." He belonged to the Lay Organization, was a class leader, and a member of the Celia Wingfield Board. Along with his church positions, Hurley was vice president of the Friendly Fifteen, business manager of The O.N.O.s' Social Club, and a member of The Vegas Boys.

Hurley leaves, with loving memories, his wife of more than 21 years, Susie Elston Young; three daughters, Valencia Kim Mitchell-Hyatt of Austell, GA, Loleta Maria McClarn of Atlanta, GA, Saundra Nadine Young of Columbia; and a special son, Demetrious Meco Dooley of Columbia. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashlee and Jordan McClarn; sister, Ethel Dyles of Columbia; sister-in-law, Barbara Wright and brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Wright of Tallahassee, FL; nephews, Sean Elston Wright of Minnaepolis, Nicholas Dyles of Los Angeles; nieces, Chira Nicole Charles Hollaman, and Cheri Sam Jones of Tampa, FL; aunts, Mary Granberry, Amanda Arnell and Ophelia Jenkins; great aunt, Ethel Perrymon, many God-children and a host of friends and other relatives.

Active pallbearers will be Mr. Jerome Arnell, Mr. Timothy Baker, Mr. Michael Baker, Mr. Todd Caskey, Mr. Toyal Crawford, Mr. George Vestal, Mr. Carl Pillow, Mr. Samuel Jones, Mr. Sean Wright and Mr. Charles Holloman.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sheriff Enoch George, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Curtis, Mr Shafter Reedus, Judge Jimmy Matthews, Dr. Joe High, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. James Yates, Retired Monsanto Employees, Mt. Pleasant Las Vegas Boys, the O.N.O.'s, William A. Graham, Ashley Brown, Mr. and Mrs. John Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Walker, Mr. Robert Ruddy Edward Jones, Mrs. Joyce Blackmon, Mr. Tommy Hight, Sr., St. Paul Male Chorus, St. Paul Trustee Board, Friendly Fifteen and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Stockton.
