Howard "Pop" Foster

May 7, 1938 — June 13, 2009

Mr. Howard Jackson "Pop" Foster, Sr., age 71, a resident of Burkett Lane in Columbia, left to go fishin' with Jesus on Saturday, June 13th. Howard prepared for his journey surrounded by his beloved family and in the arms of his loving wife of almost 53 years.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

A celebration of Pop's life will be held at a later date.

Born on May 7, 1938 in Lawrence County, he was the son of the late Leo Howard Son Foster and the late Lora Elizabeth Staggs Foster. Howard was raised in Indiana, where he lettered in sports, until he moved back to Lawrence County in his sophomore year of high school. There he met the love of his life, Phyllis June McCullom.

Through the years, Howard enjoyed motorcycles, dancing, dirt-track racing, drag racing, NASCAR and teaching others how to build fast engines. He was an avid fisherman and raised a garden every year, with the best green onions and tomatoes. A man of few words, but when he spoke, you needed to listen because it would be words that needed to be heard. He had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and treated others as he wished to be treated. He was a quiet man, who allowed no negative talk in his home and he did not speak negatively of others, nor did he want to hear anyone speak ill of others. Pop enjoyed cooking for his family with spaghetti, chili and cornbread as his specialty. He also enjoyed canning the bounties of his garden and sharing it with others. It also brought him great joy to write Christian songs and share them while visiting nursing homes for singing. His family knew that if they needed honest words of advice or a special prayer, Pop was the one to see. He was the keeper of his children's consciences and helped to keep them honest as he was. Among the many cherished memories is Pop's knack for fixing things with duct tape and WD-40. He loved his sons-in-law as his sons and taught them this special talent. He retired from Central Maintenance of Maury County as a mechanic.

Those left behind to cherish his memories are his wife: Phyllis June "Grannie" Foster; his daughters: Laurie Tim Greene of Mt. Joy and Elizabeth Antone Wix of Waverly; son: Howard "Charly" Kaye Foster Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Beth June Coty Anderson, Gabriel Sherry Hay, Lora Jimmy Cates, Lazer Turner, Holly Foster, Ashley Wix and Christopher Wix; great grandchildren: Anthony Fuller, Kassie Fuller, Mackenzie Hay and Colby Cates; sister: Nettie Gene Hensler of Remington, IN; devoted friend: David Bost our adopted yankee of Columbia; special pastor: Bro.
