Houston C. Hughes

October 4, 1932 — June 4, 2008

Mr. Houston C. Hughes, age 75, a resident of New Highway 7 in Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, in Maury Regional Hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Hughes will be conducted Friday at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Bro. Jonathan Jones II officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.

The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 4:00 -8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

The Athens, AL, native was the son of the late Jessie K. Hughes and Madge Evelyn Mathis Hughes. He was the husband of Norma Jane Brooks Hughes who survives. Mr. Hughes attended school in Spring Hill and was employed by Ryder Truck Lines. Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Spring Hill Church of Christ.

His hobbies and pastime enjoyment was softball, baseball and horseback riding. Houston was an avid rabbit hunter.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters: Janet Elizabeth Hughes Steve Webb of Columbia and Carla Jane Hughes Larry Webb of Culleoka; one son: Terry Le Hughes of Columbia; one sister: Fay Ragsdale of Nashville; his grandchildren: Lacey Webb of Culleoka, Justin Webb of Columbia, Jenni Hughes of Spring Hill and Jessie Hughes of Culleoka; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister: Peggy Smith and four brothers: Hilbert, Ray, Leo and Odie Hughes.

Pallbearers will be Justin Webb, Jessie Hughes, Paul Hughes, David Smith, Bobby Hughes, Kenneth Hughes, Tommy Smith and Mike Ragsdale. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Lewis, Ralph Barr, Frank Jones, Larry Derryberry, Randy Erwin, Gene Norman, James Winchester, Tutor Fralix, Dr. Darrell Rhinehart, Dr. Moataz Toban and membersP of the Spring Hill Church of Christ.
