Glenn Lee Cox

November 22, 1947 — May 23, 2013

Mr. Glenn Lee Cox, well respected Columbia attorney, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013 surrounded by many members of his family and friends following a long battle with cancer, at the age of 65.

Mr. Cox was born in Pelzer, South Carolina on November 22, 1947 to the late Daniel Louis Cox and the late Sally Virginia Dean Cox. He was a veteran of the United States Military having served honorably during the Vietnam era.

His aunt reflected that Glenn was, “the smartest man she’d ever met”. He used his intelligence and wisdom in obtaining a law degree and becoming a highly respected attorney who established his own law firm. His family remembers that he wasn’t just an attorney for the money, but he practiced the law by putting his clients first. His heart was in his service to those he represented. He was very effective in what he did and passionate about his work and clients. He was a proud member of the Maury County Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association.

Personally, Glenn had an extensive music collection and he always wanted music for his birthday, having very eclectic tastes. He was very “old school”, but if it was electronic, he was into it. He was the type of family member who made sure everyone else was taken care of before himself.

Strength of character for Mr. Cox was shown in his hard fought battle with cancer. He battled it four times in his life, the first time in 1991. Cancer would rear it’s ugly head three more times in 2008, 2012 and finally in 2013. His doctors were always stunned at how he could overcome whatever prognosis he was given. He fought the disease of cancer as aggressively as he fought for his clients in the courtroom.

Family was extremely important to Glenn and he is survived by his wife Vickie Powell Cox, whom he married on June 18, 2011; son, Glenn Lee Cox, II and his beloved daughter-in-law, Mary Cox; his most precious grandson, Caleb Declan Cox; daughter, Liz Brown; Justin Marshall whom he loved like a son; brother: Dan and Donna Cox; aunts: Elaine and Leonard Moon and Gwen and Norman Ragnone; uncle: Ronnie and Virginia Dean; nephews: Brandon and Whitney Cox; Bradley and Tammy Cox; and Chase Gallaway; niece: Tarah Gallaway; brother-in-law: Larry and Kathy Powell; sisters-in-law: Joyce and Jr. Kelley, Carolyn and Ricky Simpson, Wilma Robb (Mike Lindsey), Mary and Larry Thompson and Sue Powell; several other nieces and nephews; special friends: John Cheadle, Cindy Tinsley, Ben and Tracy Kittrell, Janet Lamb, and many colleagues and friends in and out of the courtroom. In addition to his parents, Glenn is also preceded in death by his brother: Wayne Cox.
