Gilbert Hal Cathey, age 76, of the Mt. Joy Community, passed away during the early hours of Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Gilbert was born in Maury County on October 1, 1942. He was so proud of his time spent as an environmentalist with Stauffer Chemical Company in Mt. Pleasant, working there for some 55 years. Even after the closing of the plant itself, he worked helping to maintain the grounds. Gilbert was married to Barbara Sims Cathey just recently celebrating 55 years of marriage. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loving to watch it on TV. He was a dedicated member of the Macedonia Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of the Mt. Joy Community; one daughter, Dawn Cathey of Thompson’s Station and his dearest companion and friend, the family dog, Sophie.
Funeral services for Mr. Cathey will be held on Saturday, October 13, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Dwight Liles officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Haywood, Jimmy Attkisson, William “Tot” Roddy, Tommy McCormick, Anthony “Big A” Davis, Jerry Wright, Clark Wright and Timmy Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of Stauffer Chemical Company, members of the Macedonia Church of Christ, Dr. John Shaw and Dr. Adetola A. Kassim.
