Gerald "Jerry" R. Hyslop

Gerald “Jerry” R. Hyslop, age 87, formerly of Elmira, NY peacefully passed away on 04/02/2013 at his daughter’s home in Summertown, TN. At his bedside were his daughter Patricia, grandson’s David, Jason and Joseph Crook; and his friend and loving caregiver Shirley Hurgeton.

Jerry was born on December 1, 1925 in Riverside, NY to the late Charles Hyslop and Rebecca DuVall. Upon graduation from Painted Post High School in 1942 he began his career at Corning Glass, Corning, NY, retiring in 1997. He cherished those 45 years and many friends. In 1944 he joined the United States Army and served during World War II as a tank crewman and military police officer with the 16th Armored Division until his discharge in 1946. His military medals included; the Victory medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign and the American Campaign.

Jerry was an avid fisherman in his younger years. Upon retirement he enjoyed woodworking and tending his vegetable garden along side his loving friend and wife Mary. He loved the outdoors and would spend many days in his beloved “woods” cutting firewood for the next winter. Jerry loved music, reading, John Wayne movies and dancing was his passion. More than anything Jerry loved family and his country. In his finally days in Tennessee he was able to visit many of the Confederate war memorials. On Memorial Day he would visit the cemeteries to honor his family and those who had given their lives for their country.

Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Lou (Hall), son Michael and grandson Collin. He leaves his daughter’s Joy (Karl) Mundy, Patricia Hyslop, Laura (Tom) Olix, Jacalyn (Rick) Grover; sons John (Nancy) Vanderhoef, Gary (Jeanne) Andrews; sisters Garnett Demonstoy, Beatrice Henaghan, Janet Bates, Sandra Whittaker; 15 grand children and 16 great grand children.

A memorial for the family will be held at a later date in New York.

Memorial donations in Jerry’s name may be directed to the Big Flats American Legion Post 1612, PO BOX 166, Big Flats, NY 14814 where he was a honorary life time member for 40 years.
