George Shrader Carpenter

September 22, 1927 — January 6, 2009

Mr. George Shrader "PaPaw" Carpenter, age 81, a resident of Lyon Street in Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at Life Care Center in Columbia.

Funeral services for Mr. Carpenter will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Mike Roberts officiating. Entombment will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will visit with friends on Wednesday from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

The Lynnville, TN, native was the son of the late Albert Houston Carpenter and Cora Martin Carpenter. He was the husband of Mary Ruth Edmonson Carpenter of Columbia. Mr. Carpenter was retired from the Nodulizing Department of Monsanto Chemical Company and was a member of the Parkway Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children: Eddie Mary Carpenter of Ringgold, GA and Susan Darryl Shuff, of Columbia; grandchildren: Amy Lynn Britt Erwin of Ringgold, GA, Carey Beth Carpenter of Ringgold, GA, Taylor Shuff and Mallory Shuff, both of Columbia; one sister: Maudia Sargent of Indiana, and special caregivers: Jeanette Bowen, Lynn Williamson, Tina Morris, Mary White, Valarie Gant, Patricia Woodson, and special nieces and nephews. Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by one brother and six sisters: Mahlon Carpenter, Ella Carpenter, Ruth Dixon, Claudia Lane, Dorothy Smith, Grace Gilliam and Mildred Sargent.

Pallbearers will be Britt Erwin, O'Neill Moore, Billy Sargent, Bill Reischman, Monty Gilliam, Bill Duncan, L. R. Edmonson, John New, Charles Crotz, and Don Westmoreland. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeanette Bowen, Lynn Williamson, Tina Morris, Mary White, Valarie Gant, Patricia Woodson, caregivers at Life Care Center of Columbia and friends at Parkway Baptist Church.
