George Robert Cooper, Ph.D., age 88, passed away Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 at Crocket Hospital in Lawrenceburg, TN.
Private services will be held at a later date for the family.
Williams Funeral Home of Columbia is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on November 29th, 1921, in Connersville, IN, son of the late William R. and Margaret Frederick Cooper and the husband of Elizabeth H. Cooper. He was a distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. His career spanned over 40 years. During his tenure, he was Director of the Graduate Program in that field. Throughout the years, George was a well-esteemed program consultant for the U.S. Dept. of Defense. He also worked for various defense contracting firms as well as numerous government agency programs. During, and following WWII, he was involved in developing secure military communications systems and developed significant advancements in U.S. Radar Systems. George had engineering patents for his work and was the co-author of several engineering texts. He received the outstanding Electrical Engineer Award from Purdue University in 1994. In 1998, following his retirement from academia and defense-related programs, he moved with his wife Lisa to Lawrenceburg, TN.
Even beyond his hard work and meritorious professional accomplishments, George was a truly great man, with a particularly kind, patient, compassionate soul, and a man with immeasurable integrity. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife: Elizabeth "Lisa" Cooper of Lawrenceburg, TN; his sons: Thomas Cooper of West Lafayette, IN; Steve Cooper of Lafayette, IN; and Dave and Elvie Cooper of San Diego, CA; daughter-in-law: Bland Nesbit Cooper wife of the late son Michael Cooper of Aspen, CO; grandchildren: Lane Cooper of San Diego, CA and Melissa Karschner of San Angelo, TX.
