Gary Lee Stewart, age 62, went to Heaven Saturday, November 3, 2018 surrounded by family and close friends.
He was born on December 18, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Melvindale High school in 1974 and then from Wayne State University. He worked and retired after 39 years for General Motors. Gary came to know the Lord at the age of 18 at Gilead Baptist Church in Detroit, MI; where he was a faithful member of the Omega youth group. Gary and Lynne were united in marriage on October 18, 1975 at Gilead. After moving to Columbia, he was an active Member, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and worked with youth group at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. He went on several mission trips throughout his membership. Gary loved sports and enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and softball. He was an avid Alabama fan. He had an amazing sense of humor, was loved by all little children as he loved them, never met a stranger, had a huge servants heart, loved to hunt and golf.
Gary is survived by his wife of 43 years: Carol Lynne,; daughter: Heather (Jermaine) Lipscomb; 2 sons: Ryan (Julliane) Stewart and Michael Stewart; grandsons: Austin McGrone and Landon Stewart; mother: Loretta Doris Stewart of Allen Park, MI; sister Cathy McGowan of Brownstown, MI; father and mother in law: Paul and Gloria Taylor of Beverly Hills, FL; sister in law: Janet (Chuck) Goley of Clermont, FL; niece: Sarai; and nephews: Tim, Paul, and Seth. Gary is preceded in death by his father: George Lee Stewart and 2 grandchildren Ashley and Bryce Stewart.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 6, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. The service celebrating Gary’s life will be held Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church beginning at 1:00 p.m. with. Bob Vassar and John Harris officiating. The family will visit from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Gary’s name be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
