Ethel M. Thompson

Ethel Akin Mooney Thompson, 103, longtime resident of W. 7TH Street, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2004, at NHC Columbia.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bill Williamson, Rev. Jim Hughes and Rev. Tommy Vann officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

The Maury County native was born November, 29, 1900, to the late William and Etta Branch Mooney. She received her early education in Nashville. She returned to Columbia in 1924 with her husband, the late W.K. Thompson, a well known businessman and civic leader. They were married 52 years, until his death in 1974. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker who excelled in needlework, including crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery and delightful handmade dolls. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and long time member of the Sunshine Class at the First United Methodist Church in Columbia.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Ann Thompson Willis of Columbia; a son, William K. Thompson, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Betsy Jackson Thompson of Pine Bluff, AR; two granddaughters, Katie Willis Basanavicius of Columbia, TN, and Eleanor Ann Shaifer of Pine Bluff, AR; two grandsons, Chip Willis of Sarasota, FL, and Mark Thompson of Oberentfelden, Switzerland; three great grandchildren, Will Cannady of Columbia, TN, Rachel and Jennifer Shaifer of Pine Bluff, AR; two nieces, Mary Ann Hyde of Noblesville, IN and Mayetta Roberts of Franklin, TN; special family friend, Vicki Stremming Willis of Tallahassee, FL.

Pallbearers will be Will Cannady, Neil Basanavicius, Chip Willis, Mark Thompson, Rufus Ross, Jim Lochridge and Bedford Lochridge.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 222 W. 7th Street, Columbia, TN 38401

The family would like to express their special thanks to the congregation of the First United Methodist Church, the First Presbyterian Church Women?s Circle, employees and staff of NHC Columbia, Dr. Gaylon Harris, Charlie and Guy Odom for their thoughtfulness and concern over the years.
