Eldon Robert Attkisson passed away on Monday, September 17, at his home with his daughter where he had lived for over 16 years in Columbia. He was a member of the Spencer Hill Church of Christ. Eldon was a dragline operator for Sisco Brothers and later for Knox Mining of Mt. Pleasant.
He was born July 9, 1918 in Maury County, the son of the late James Monroe Attkisson and Sarah Henson Attkisson.
Eldon loved his family, spending many Sunday afternoons enjoying family meals and playing hide-and-seek with his grandchildren. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren lovingly called him “Da”. He was a simple man who loved God and read his Bible daily. He never met a stranger because he enjoyed good conversation. His past time was going out to eat, especially to Cracker Barrel.
Eldon was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Viola Waldrop Attkisson. He is survived by his children, Martha (Jerry) McNeece of Mt. Pleasant, Sheila (Tommy) May of Columbia and Billy Wayne Attkisson of Columbia; grandchildren, Randy (Lisa) McNeece of Mt. Pleasant, Kristy (larry) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, and Michelle (Jason) O’Guinn of Centerville; great-grandchildren, Wesley (Alyson) McNeece, Emily McNeece, Robby McNeece, Dakota Brown, Kyla and Carter O’Guinn; great-great-grandchildren, Austin and Brantley McNeece along with one sister, Dot Thompson of Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services for Eldon will be conducted Wednesday at 4:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Andy Pogue and Randy McNeece officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery.
The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Larry Brown, Randy McNeece, Larry McNeece, Wesley McNeece, Robby McNeece, Dakota Brown, Richard Cothran and Jason O’Guinn. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy May, Dean Stewart, Tim Boshears, Tillman Knox, Jerry Attkisson and members of the Spencer Hill Church of Christ.
Eldon’s family wishes to thank Dr. J. Cummins Couch for the wonderful care given to their father at home – without him they would not have made it. Also to NHC Home Care nurses who were spectacular and last, but not least, Tammy Stewart and Kathy Barnhill, his caregivers who were sent from heaven.
