Edward Fields Smith

October 4, 1916 — January 7, 2003

Mr. Edward F. "Ed" Smith, 86, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at his residence on Rolling Fields Drive.

A memorial service for Mr. Smith will be conducted Monday, January 13, 2003 at 12:00 noon at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Bill Williamson officiating. The family will visit with friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. Williams Columbia Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The Batesburg, South Carolina native was the son of the late Edward Emerson and Frances Young Smith. He was the husband of the late Beatrice Wilkins Smith who died in 1999. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired chemist for Hooker/Occidental Chemical Company. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church former long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia. He was active in boy scouting, having been scoutmaster for Troop 109 at the First Presbyterian Church for many years. He was an avid woodworker, in which he was a member of the Duck River Woodturners Association.

He is survived by two sons, Edward F. Smith, Jr. and wife Pam Beaver of Nashville, TN and James Cleveland Smith and wife Christie of Clarksville, TN; a sister, Frances Herrmann of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren, Kristin Smith of New York, NY, Cleveland Smith of Oxford, OH, Lauren Hof, Nick Hof, Julie Hof, Joe Hof, and Heather Hof all of Clarksville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ida Wells Smith.
