Dr. William Miles Melvin, 85, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Crockett Hospital.
He was a retired chiropractor and practiced in Florence, AL and Lawrenceburg for 18 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Dorothy Melvin of Chattanooga and one brother, Eugene, Jr., also of Chattanooga. Dr. Melvin was born in Charleston, S.C. but grew up in Chattanooga.
Immediately after graduating from Chattanooga High School he entered Naval Aviation pilot training and became a Naval Aviator in August 1943. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and eight Air Medals for his service during WW-2 in the Pacific. Following the military service he worked for GMAC in Chattanooga, taking an early retirement after 17 years to enter Palmer College of Chiropractic where he graduated in June 1975. Dr. Melvin was a member of the United Methodist Church. As he requested, his remains were cremated.
Dr. Melvin is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Violette Duchene Melvin, two daughters, Mrs. Janet Davis Ricky, of Atwood, TN, Mrs. Jean Kirchner Rudy, of Decatur Al and a son, William M. Melvin, Jr. Pam of Huntsville, Al.; eight grandchildren also survive: Julie Vaden Smith Jeff, Jason Vaden, Jona Vaden, Rudy Kirchner III, Megan Kirchner Jett Jonathan, William Melvin III, Holly Melvin and Maria Melvin. He is also survived by one great-grandson: Ethan Vaden Smith.

Williams Funeral in Columbia will be in charge of the arrangements.
