Douglas Wayne Stanfill, age 79, long time Columbia businessman, passed away after an extended illness in the early hours of March 1, 2016, at NHC Columbia.
Wayne was born December 16, 1936, in the Santa Fe community of Maury County, the son of the late Joe Leland Stanfill, Sr., and Jessie Hill Stanfill. On October 9, 1959, he married Wanda Poag and they enjoyed 56 years together and were blessed with one daughter, Renee. Wayne served our country in the United States Army, Charlie Battery, Third Battalion, 30th Field Artillery Regiment in Dachau, Germany. He was the owner and operator of Wayne’s Mobil Service Center on South Main Street, along with other gas stations in various locations for 36 years.
Wayne dearly loved his family, his country and most of all, his Lord. He witnessed to everyone he met. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and friend. He was a long time member and former deacon of Highland Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Stanfill of Columbia; daughter, Renee (Kenneth) Lovett of Columbia; grandson, Adam Erwin of Columbia; step-grandchildren, Katie (Nathan) Hill and Ken (Hannah) Lovett II; step-great-grandchildren, Shelby Hill, Parker Hill, Desmond Lovett and Lennon Lovett; sisters, Maggie (Ray) Shouse of Columbia, Charlotte McCoy of Columbia, Addie Crotts of Columbia and brother, Ray (Cheryl) Stanfill of Culleoka. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe Leland Stanfill, Jr., Hobert Stanfill, Donald Stanfill and Winford Stanfill.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 P.M. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Pastor Mark Proctor officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.
Pallbearers will be Manuel Andongui, Ricky Stanfill, Kenny Brady, David Stanfill, Pete Ridley, Charles Poag and Kenneth Lovett. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present deacons of Highland Park Baptist Church.
