Douglas C. Demastus

January 21, 1928 — July 18, 2011

Mr. Douglas C. Demastus, age 83, a former resident of Highland Avenue in Columbia, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011 at Life Care Center of Columbia.

Born January 21, 1928 in Culleoka, son of the late Huston and Katie Lou Clark Demastus and the husband of Jean McClung Demastus. A graduate of Columbia High School and a member of the ROTC, he served as a cook in the Army because he said he did not want to kill anybody. He started working with Columbia Power as a ditch digger and retired as an architect. He built the first mini storage in Columbia, built the additions to the Bel-Air Nursing home and laid out the majority of the water lines in the city of Columbia.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Demastus is survived by his children: Jason Demastus of Crystal River, FL, Michael Demastus of Huntsville, AL, Pamila Raymond Daniel of Neapolis and Melissa Vance King of Columbia; grandchildren: Kate Demastus, Rachel King and Sarah King, all of Columbia, Zachary Daniel, Gabriel Daniel and Damian Daniel, all of Neapolis and Sam Demastus of Huntsville; great granddaughter: Shelby Goodgine. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Sam Demastus, Billy Kirk Demastus, Lola Rinks, Estelle Krys, Lucille Still; a great grandson: Christopher Chance Goodgine.

Funeral services for Mr. Demastus will be conducted 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with David Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provide by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be friends and family. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Williamson, Norman Dean, past and present employees of CPWS.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Life Care and the 3rd floor nursing staff of Maury Regional.
