Delmer James Still

November 21, 1944 — February 26, 2015

Mr. Delmer James Still, age 70, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at his residence in Columbia, Tennessee.

Delmer was born on November 21, 1944 in Hickman County, Tennessee to Raleigh Kirkland Still and Ethel Hudgins Still. Delmer was a veteran of the US Armed forces and was stationed in Germany for his training.

Delmer was a good husband, father, grandpa and friend. He was liked by everyone who met him. He was known to Columbia as “Muffler Man”. He put exhaust systems on hundreds of vehicles. And was always told he was “the only one who will work on my truck”.

He loved spending time with his wife, “Dear”, as he called her. In his eyes “Dear” hung the moon. He was happy and content just sitting on the couch with the love of his life, watching cooking shows and country music videos. He loved his only daughter, “Hon”, as he called her and his two grandsons. His eyes always shined with pride when he talked about his “boys”. He was a wonderful man, old fashioned and set in his ways. He loved gardening and growing plants and vegetables. He could grow a big, beautiful tomato in a five gallon bucket. He loved planting flowers for “Dear” just to see her eyes light up.

He taught us all so much. He would get up around 4:00 a.m. and make chicken and dumplings for his “Dear” and his “Hon”. He loved to cook, whether grilling or cooking on the stove. He would also ride bikes with his grandsons and play in the creek with them. He loved hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed piddling. He always took pride in the appearance of their yard, the cleanliness of his truck and himself…shirt always tucked in neatly and with a belt. He was a role model to his grandsons and he never even realized it. He will be greatly missed by his wife, daughter and grandsons. We love you, PawPaw.

Delmer is survived by his wife: Nancy Lou “Dear” Bradford Still of Columbia; daughter: Kelly “Hon” (Kevin Burns) Guttowsky of Santa Fe; grandsons: Joshua and Justin Guttowsky; sister: Louise Hughes of Franklin; brothers: Raleigh Still, Jr. of Franklin, Lewis Still of Franklin and Luther Still of Franklin; and sister: Geneva Ragsdale. He was preceded in death by his parents: Raleigh Kirkland Still and Ethel Hudgins Still; and sisters: Christine Beard, Ovella Ragan, Evelyn Pewitt and Lily Still.
