Mr. Danny Wayne Barker, age 56, a resident of Baptist Branch Road in Mt. Pleasant passed away Thursday, July 23 in Orange Beach, AL.
Funeral services for Danny will be conducted Monday at 4:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Frank Webb and Rev. Elmer Crosby officiating. Burial will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Tennessee National Guard.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 – 8:00 P.M.at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant and on Monday from 2:00 P.M. until time of the service at the church.
Born March 6, 1953 in Maury County, Danny was the son of Murry and Katie King Barker of Mt. Pleasant and the husband of Mary Cole Barker, also of Mt. Pleasant. He was a lineman for Mt. Pleasant Power System since 1996 before becoming disabled. Danny spent six years with the Tennessee National Guard and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant.
Danny loved the time he spent with his horseback riding and campfire friends. In his younger days he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed water skiing on the Tennessee River with his children. Danny promised his grandchildren a wonderful trip to the Gulf Coast which he was a part of and provided for them before his passing on Thursday. The family has decided to make this trip an annual family event in his honor.
He was an accomplished poet. A number of his poems will be read at his service .
Survivors in addition to his parents and wife include his children: Jason Barker of Nashville and Jill Thompson of Charleston, SC; step-son: Jeremy Wendy Taft of Culleoka; grandchildren: Joshua Taft and Hannah Taft of Culleoka; one brother: Jerry Kathy Barker of Franklin; one sister: Patricia Ingram of Columbia; two nephews: Brent Barker and Adam Corrie Ingram and two nieces: Jennifer Barker and Ashley Jonathan Riley. Danny is also survived by the mother of his children: Carol McCormick of Mt. Pleasant.
Pallbearers will be Randy Drane, Adam Ingram, Jonathan Riley, David Edwards, Otis Steele and Doug Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Wendell and Debbie O'Neal, members of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, employees of the Mt. Pleasant Power System and all of his campfire friends and horseback riding friends.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to Hospice Compassus of Tennessee, Covenant Hospice of Alabama, especially chaplain Willie Smith and to Nathan of Gulf Medical Services of Alabama. Also to everyone involved in the Barker Benefit in Mt. Pleasant.
