Curtis R. Dowdy, retired minister of Highland Church of Christ passed from this life on Thursday evening surrounded by his loving family. Curtis was born on July 12, 1932 to the late John Horton Dowdy and Mavis Gibson Dowdy in Calhoun County, AL.
He was a pulpit minister for 18 years and an educational director for 16 years at Highland Church of Christ. Curtis also served churches in AL, GA, and TN. He had a set schedule to visit hospitals and nursing homes even as a shut in, he called per his schedule. Curtis loved people, his family, and most of all, his Lord.
The family will visit with friends on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Highland Church of Christ with David Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 19 Herbert Griffin.
Mr. Dowdy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wynona Smith Dowdy of Columbia; Daughters, Lisa (Todd) Fitzgerald of Santa Fe, and Denise (Greg) Sanders of Prospect; Grandchildren, Courtney Anderson (Fiancé Brad Potts), Kalee Beth (TJ) Thompson, Jack Fitzgerald, and Jayson Hamilton; and great grandchildren, Chloe Anderson, Todd Anderson, and Chandler Thompson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, John Curtis Dowdy.
Jack Fitzgerald, Jayson Hamilton, TJ Thompson, Brad Potts, Curtis Flowers, and Vince King will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Faye Flowers, Dr. John Simmons, Harriett Jett, Mattie Lee Shannon, David and Nancee Glascow, Melissa King, Philip Paul, Wayne and Donna Williams, and Paul Wagner.
The family of Curtis wants to send special thanks to nurses of Hospice Compassus, and caregivers from Home Instead, Melissa and Jessie.
In Mr. Dowdy’s memory, memorials may be made to the Highland Church of Christ building fund and Hospice Compassus of Columbia, Tennessee.
