Mrs. Clara Rolen Gilstrap, age 100, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Clara was born on June 12, 1916, in Sevierville, Tennessee to Charlie Rolen and Alice Williams Rolen. She was married to Harold Gilstrap who passed away in 2004. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. Clara had a long and interesting life which including living on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D. C. for over thirty years and working in Naval Research during WWII while there. While working at Jelloff’s Department Store in Washington D. C. she was among those who witnessed President John F. Kennedy’s funeral caisson passing by en route to Arlington Cemetery. She also worked at Robinson’s Department Store for many years. She loved sharing memories of her life with others and was always smiling.
Mrs. Gilstrap is survived by her siblings: Wanda R. Withers of Brentwood, Lota R. Simmons of Mt. Pleasant and Gerald (Pat) Rolen of Hermitage; twenty nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; and special friend and roommate at Mt. Pleasant Health and Rehab: Martha Payne. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Charles Rolen, Margaret (Tony) Gregory, Ruby (Ira) Crump, Bill (Mary) Rolen and Anna Emogene Rolen; brothers-in-law: Barney Withers and Dan Simmons.
Funeral services for Clara will be held at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. and will be officiated by Rev. Frank Webb. The family will visit with friends from 12 Noon until service time on Saturday also at the funeral home.A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 30, at 10:30 AM in Woodlawn Memory Gardens in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.
