Christene H.L. Travis

Christene "Chris" Lockhart Travis nee Hooper, 89, of Community Care of Rutherford County, Murfreesboro, TN and formerly of Nashville TN, passed away, Sunday, February 26, 2012.
Born April 23, 1922 in Dickson, TN, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Thomas Elizabeth Fields Hooper. Her family moved to Old Hickory, TN where she graduated from Du Pont High School with the class of 1941. She was an excellent basketball player for the Lady Bulldogs. After graduation she worked at Vultee Aircraft, Inc., checking lights in the tail units of bombers produced for WWII.
She married Francis Leon Lockhart, Jr. on October 1, 1943 in Davidson Co., TN. They lived in Fallon, NV while he was in the Navy. They also lived in Richmond, VA with family during which time her first daughter was born. They moved back to Nashville, TN after the war, where her other two daughters were born.
She was a bookkeeper for many years at Rogers Group, Inc. until her retirement. She volunteered after retiring as a "Pink Lady" at a Nashville Memorial Hospital in Madison, TN. Christene and Francis were huge fans of Vanderbilt Basketball, attending many games together. They delighted in their grandchildren. Family gatherings were always special, with lots of hugs and plenty of fabulous food.
She was a noted seamstress and enjoyed all types of needle work, gardening and canning. She had an excellent sense of style and a plucky personality. She continued to have strong ties to Dickson, TN. She regularly visited and assisted family and friends. Her greatest love was that of her family, who always came first. A woman of great faith, she will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was always generous with her time and love.
Later in life she married David Stone Travis, June 1991, in Davidson Co., TN, a second marriage, both of whom were widowed.
She is survived by three daughters, Billie Sharon Ronald Scott Duncan of Clarksville, TN, Francis Elaine Joe Max Williams of Columbia, TN, Lynn Ellen Gailbreath of Murfreesboro, TN; Grandchildren, David Wayne Duncan, Lisa Ellen nee Duncan Travis, both of Clarksville, TN, Anderson Bell Williams of Murfreesboro, TN, Stacey Lee nee Williams Grady Givens of Fairview, TN, Jesse Glenn Shani Gailbreath, Rachel Christene Gailbreath, both of Murfreesboro, TN; Great-Grandchildren, Kayla Michelle Duncan and Jessica Lynn Travis, both of Clarksville, TN, Sebastian Glenn Gailbreath of Murfreesboro, TN, and Grady McClelland Sidney Woodrow Levi Lockhart Givens of Fairview, TN; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by two husbands, Francis Leon Lockhart, Jr. and David Stone Travis; a son-in-law, Kerry Glenn Gailbreath; a grandchild, Elizabeth Anne Williams. The last of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Jay Joy Clara Hooper, Claude Sullivan Laura Hooper, Hugh Thomas Minnie Hooper, Carter Lee Gladys Hooper and Waddell Lucas Edith Hooper and five sisters: Willie Mae Hooper, Ledell Lela John Dorton, Mary Vester Elbert England, Billie Bertha Claud H. Bell and Lorene Joe England.
The family will receive visitors at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home in Murfreesboro, TN 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 29, at the Dickson Funeral Home in Dickson, TN. Burial will follow at Dickson Union Cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
