Charles Robert Martinez

November 9, 1923 — March 11, 2011

Mr. Charles Robert Martinez, age 87, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011 at Signature Health Care Center in Columbia following an extended illness.

Charles was born on November 9, 1923 in Raton, New Mexico and was the son of the late Eli and Lucille Watkins Martinez. He married his childhood sweetheart, Marilyn Derickson, on January 4, 1942. Mr. Martinez joined the US Navy immediately and in order to receive "hazardous duty pay", he applied for submarine school. As a graduate of submarine school, Mr. Martinez would be aboard the USS Stingray during WWII. He made five war patrols during WWII, which took him to three ports in Australia and then finally to Wellington, New Zealand. After his discharge in 1945, Charles and Marilyn returned to Raton to begin their family. The Martinez family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he went on to attend DeForest Electronic College in Chicago and then Grand Rapids Junior College, where he graduated as an Electrical Engineer. He worked for Lear/Siegler, a Defense Contractor, from 1950 until his retirement in 1986.

He and Marilyn had a wonderful, long and healthy retirement in Michigan before they decided to come to Tennessee to be closer to their daughter, Cathy. They enjoyed another 6 years of good weather, family and good health before Charles became ill. He was admitted to Signature HealthCARE in October of 1997 and his wife and lifelong companion would be admitted only 8 weeks later. The Martinez's celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in January of this year. Mr. Martinez was of the Catholic Faith.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Cathy Stefon and her husband Charles Jackson of Columbia and Charyl Moss and her husband Douglas Moss of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother: William David Martinez.

The Martinez family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Interment will be in Raton, New Mexico at a later date.
