Mr. Charles J. ?Chuck? Morefield, age 87, a resident of Alexandria, VA and former resident of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Alexandria.
Funeral services for Mr. Morefield will be conducted Monday at 9:30 A.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Bob Adair officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Fayetteville with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #42 of Fayetteville.
The family will visit with friends on Sunday from 3:00 ? 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Born in Manmouth, IL, he was the son of the late William Wesley and Sara Elizabeth Eggers Morefield and husband of the late Frances Riegger Morefield, who preceded him in death on June 28, 2006.
Mr. Morefield retired from the U.S. Army in 1969 after 30 years of service. He served in Europe in WW II, the Korean and Vietnam campaigns. His decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal, 2 Army Commendation Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct with 9 clusters, ETO Ribbon with Silver Star, American Defense, Army of Occupation EUR, American Campaign, Victory Medal, National Defense, Korean Service with 4 stars, UN service, Vietnam Service, Army of Occupation FECOM National Guard Commendation, three awards from foreign countries, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Honor Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.
Mr. Morefield was a member of the Indiana Red Leg Association field artillery, a graduate of Columbia State Community College, and a long time member of Highland Park Baptist Church. He retired from the Army with the rank of Sergeant Major.
Survivors include his sons, Charles Landess Morefield of Alexandria, VA and Stephen Foster Morefield of China; daughter-in-law: Linda Prusoff Morefield; grandchildren: Michael Samuel Morefield and Jessica Ann Morefield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Highland Park Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #42 in Fayetteville.
