Charles Phillip "Hoolie" Vandiver, 64, a resident of Enterprise Road in Mt. Pleasant, passed away, Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at his residence.
Born August 8, 1946 in Maury County, son of the late Horace and Lizzy Stewart Vandiver and husband of Ruby Reed Vandiver. A 1964 graduate of Haylong High School, "Hoolie" worked for Stauffer Chemical, was a reserve officer for over 20 yeras while working for Stauffer and later the Mt. Pleasant Police Department, where he retired as a sergeant. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of God.
Charles got the nickname "Hoolie" from Jim Spears saying that he played football so good that they were going to send him to the Hula Bowl to play. After that, every time Charles scored on the football field, the crowd would yell "Hoolie". Charles would go to watch and always supported the Mt. Pleasant Tigers Football team. Even after his accident, he and his dog Julie would go in the car and watch all the games.
In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his children: Karen Vandiver of Mt. Pleasant and Phillip Debbie Vandiver of Lynnville; brother: Allen Ann Vandiver of Mt. Pleasant; sister: Joyce Gerald Paul of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Bree Daniel Reece, Charles Anthony Allen, Ashley Brandon Finley and Justin Tiffany Vandiver, all of Mt. Pleasant; great grandchildren: Makayla and Weston Finley and Nikki, Lizzi, Leiah and Marissa Reece; sister-in-law; Peggy Vandiver. He was preceded in death by a brother: Billy Joe Vandiver.
Funeral services for Mr. Vandiver will be conducted 10:00 AM Saturday, February 12, 2011 in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Howard Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Napier Cemetery in Lewis County.
The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jr. and Wayne Vandiver, Tony, Terry and Bret Curtis, Will Davis, Jeff Reed and Jack Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be George Davis, Gary Calvert, Paul Crews, Darryl Rochester and the past and present employees of Zeneca Maintenance Department.
