Mr. Charles Alfred Proctor, Jr., 92, formerly of Covert, Michigan and a resident of Brentwood, died Monday, December 5, 2005 at Alive Hospice of Nashville.
The family will visit with friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Out-of-state services will be conducted at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven, Michigan. Burial will be in the Covert Township Cemetery.
The Jackson, Mississippi native was born on January 21, 1913, the son of the late Charles Webster and Annie E. Mitchell Proctor. Charles graduated from Lanier High School in June 1932 and attended Jackson State College where he played football. On June 2, 1934 he married his high school sweetheart, Fannie Lofton who preceded him in death. Charles was employed by Swift & Company and became an International Union representative. In 1948 he traveled extensively in Europe including Warsaw and Moscow to promote the union movement and free trade. The family moved to Covert, Michigan in 1956 where Charles was active in the community. He was elected to serve on the Board of Education, served as president of the Van Buren United Civic Organization and led their fundraising drive to build the Community Center. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Covert and served as secretary and trustee. Charles retired from Canonie Construction Company in 1981 to enjoy fishing and traveling with his wife. They loved to visit their children and grandchildren. He was widely known in retirement for being an avid fan of the Covert Bull Dogs Basketball team and never missed a game. This resulted in him being made an honorary team member in February 1997. In July 2003 Charles moved to Brentwood, Tennessee to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Willie and Delores Proctor.
He is survived by a daughter, Ann Len Hutchinson of San Antonio, TX; two sons, Charles A. Proctor, III of Los Angeles, CA and Willie J. Delores Proctor of Brentwood, TN; a brother, Willie Earlene Proctor of Jackson, MS; six grandchildren, Willie Proctor, Jr., Leonard Hutchinson, Najah Render, Mel Hutchinson, David Hutchinson, and Aaron Hutchinson; five great grandchildren; three nieces and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Damian Proctor; two brothers, Mayrant Proctor and Myles Proctor; a sister, Nancy Lanier.
