Cecil Curtis Gum, a devoted husband, proud veteran, and hardworking man shaped by a generation of grit and resilience, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025 at the age of 91.
Born into a time when life demanded toughness and perseverance, Cecil embodied those values from an early age. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.
After discharging from the military, Cecil continued to work tirelessly for 28 years in civilian life, driving a truck for General Motors. His work ethic was rigorous, even in retirement, he was rarely idle.
Cecil retired early to care for his beloved wife after she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. His love and loyalty were evident in the quiet, steadfast way he stood by her, never wavering in his commitment.
In his later years, Cecil embraced the open road. With a camper or trailer in tow, he traveled far and wide—across the Midwest and Western United States, through the sweeping beauty of Canada, and even into the wilds of Alaska. A true outdoorsman, he especially loved fishing and hunting, with Black Lake in Michigan holding a special place in his heart.
When he wasn’t on the road or in the woods, Cecil could be found in his garage, tinkering with tools or working on one of his many projects. He had a knack for fixing things and found joy in the simple satisfaction of making something work again or maintain a spotless yard.
More than anything, Cecil adored his great-grandchildren. He loved to dote on them, showing his affection in quiet but meaningful ways—always present, always proud.
Cecil leaves behind a legacy of dedication, adventure, and hardwork. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Cecil is survived by: his son Mike (Kathy) Gum; daughter: Lucretia (Dan) Mittelbrun; grandchildren: John (Cara) Gum, Rebecca Gum, Sarah Bays, Kyle (Samantha) Bays, Amelia (Mackenzie) Crandall, David Mittelbrun, John Mittelbrun, and Tom Mittlebrun; great grandchildren: Michael Blaide Beard, Gavin Curtis Gum, Ellie Gum, Gage Dempsey, Madelyn Gum, Nolen Bays, Logan Bays, Lora Lee Crandall, and Jensen Crandall; Cecil is preceded in death by his 1st wife and mother of his child: Margaret Gum, and his second Wife Loretta Gum; parents: Floyd and Grace Gum and siblings: Verdie, Orie, Madaline, Ollie, Genevive, Edith and Floyd, Jr.
