Catherine Smith-Warden

November 16, 1925 — January 22, 2010

Mrs. Catherine Smith-Warden, age 84, a resident of River Ridge Road in Lewisburg, passed away on Friday, January 22, at NHC Columbia.

A memorial service for Mrs. Warden will be conducted Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home with Rick Points and a grandson, Wesley Bishop officiating. A dove release will be held following the service at the ossuary in The Arbors at Polk Memorial Gardens.

The family will visit with friends on Sunday from 2:00 – 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Born on November 16, 1925 in New York City, Catherine was the daughter of the late John Degnan and Mary Carroll Degnan. She was first married to the late Sam Smith who preceded her in death in 1963 and later to the late Kenneth Warden who preceded her in death in 2003. Catherine was the retired postmistress at George Peabody College and was a member of the Fairlane Church of Christ.

Survivors include her children: Dan Smith of Columbia and Nancy Sue Larry Bishop of Lewisburg; grandchildren: Claire Elizabeth Ben Cravy of Illinois, Kimberly Kevin Barnes of Ashland City, Michael Krause of Nashville, Cathy Shawn Jones of Chapel Hill, Lelia Eric Lindhorst of St. Louis, Wesley Amy Bishop of Winter Park, FL and Sam Draper-Smith of Nashville; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Viola Youngberg of Washington Township, NJ and Veronica Richard Lake of Brick, NJ; one sister-in-law: Beatrice Degnan of South Seaside, NJ and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Catherine was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Payne and Margaret Hohlfeld and three brothers: Patrick Degnan, John Degnan and Richard Degnan.
