Carter South, Jr., 79, a longtime resident of Greenwood Acres Drive in Columbia, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Signature Health Care in Columbia.
Born July 18, 1932 in Limestone County, AL, son of the late Cullen and Prudie Franklin South and husband of the late Mary Frances Hill South. He was a salesman for Bunny Bread Company/Lewis Brothers Bakery in Murfreesboro and sold the first honey bun in Columbia, a US Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Northside Baptist Church. After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling with their family and friends. He loved fishing, playing cards and bingo, raising tomatoes, collecting clocks and going to his grandsons' baseball and hockey games.
Mr. South is survived by his children: Ronnie Annette South and Rickey Lisa South, both of Columbia and Patricia Roger LeMond of Franklin; grandchildren: Joey Julie South, Josh Megan South, Roger LeMond, Jr. fiancée: Megan Miller, Patrick LeMond, Ben South, Amy Tony Underwood and Mary Katherine South; great grandchildren: Jackson Adam South, Justin Andrew South and Jameson Carter South; sisters: Margie Nelson and Wanda Brooks, both of Columbia; brothers: Lonnie South and Roger Patti South, both of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Hubert South, Earline Wilson and Judy Bradford.
Funeral services for Mr. South will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Northside Baptist Church in Columbia with Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Williams Funeral Home and Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Northside Baptist Church and his friends and neighbors of Greenwood Acres Drive. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff of Signature Health Care.
