Carlton Swafford

Mr. Carlton Swafford, 77, a resident of Columbia, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services for Mr. Swafford will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, August 8, at the St. Catherine Catholic Church with Reverend Father Clare Hendricks and Deacon Price Keller officiating. Burial will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the U.S. Army. Carlson Swafford, grandson, will be playing Taps.

The family will receive friends Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

Born May 11, 1932 in Lawrence County, he was the son of the late James H. and Lestical Dooley Swafford. A 1952 graduate of Columbia Military Academy, he was a member of the Tennessee National Guard, until entering into active duty in the Army from 1955-57. After his discharge, he served as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserves. Mr. Swafford was a broadcaster in Radio and Television for 38 years. After retirement from broadcasting, he was certified as an Addiction Counselor for Buffalo Valley, Inc. for 15 years.

He was member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, where he served as a reader and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member and past president of the Waynesboro and Mt. Pleasant Rotary Clubs and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dora Foster Swafford of Columbia; his children: Michael DeVaughn Terri Swafford of Lebanon, James Frederick Swafford of Culleoka and Carla Swafford Duren of Spring Hill; brother: William L. Yvonne Swafford of Talbott, TN; one brother-in-law: Milton Bettie Foster of Aiken, SC; 6 grandsons, 6 granddaughters and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mike Swafford Jr., James Swafford II, Jeremy Swafford, Preston Duren, Carlson Swafford, Tanner Smith, Darren Singleton and Jeff Swafford. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Paul, Bob Thomas, friends at St. Catherine Catholic Church and past co-workers in Buffalo Valley.

Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Catholic Church, Building Maintenance Fund, 3019 Cayce Lane, Columbia, TN 38401.
