Carl Norman Roland

Mr. Carl Norman Roland, age 78, resident of Trousdale Lane in Columbia, passed away on Friday, December 3, 2010 at NHC-Hillview from a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Roland will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 9, 2010 in the chapel of the Williams Funeral Home of Columbia with Rick Points officiating. Interment will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors being provided by the United States Air Force.

The Roland family will receive friends from 6-9 P.M. on Tuesday and from 4-9 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Born September 29, 1932 in Maury County, he was the son of the late William Marion "Will" and Altha Bessie McNeese Roland. He was the husband of the late Marion K. Hammox Roland who passed away on November 11, 2001. In 1947 at the age of 15, Mr. Roland joined the United States Army. In 1948 through 1951 he worked for Lynnville Cab Station. In 1952, He joined the United States Air Force and served our country until the year of 1956. When he was discharged from the Air Force he was a staff sergeant. After working different jobs, on January 20, 1962, Mr. Roland started working for Hooker Chemical Company. On October 1, 1987, he retired from Occidental Chemical Company former Hooker with 25 years of service. After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed working in the yard, raising vegetables and raising cattle until her death. Mr. Roland was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Roland is survived by his daughter, Karla Roland of Columbia; son, Edward N. Roland of Columbia; two granddaughters, Misty M. Roland and Ashley B. Shane Hux both of Columbia; two great-granddaughters, Hannah M. Campbell and Katherine L. "Katie" Campbell both of Columbia; great-grandson, Shelton M. Hux of Columbia; two brothers, Barney Roland of Columbia and Alton Roland of Prattville, Alabama; two sister-in- laws, Jean Lyles and Elizabeth Prince both of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, Toby, Johnny and Rondal Roland and one sister, Katherine M. Bowman.

Active pallbearers will be James O. Prince, Edward A. Lyles, Jerry Corvin, Tommy Hight, Jr., Bob Shields, Jerry Church, Jason E. Campbell and Shane Hux. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. J. Cummins Couch, Dr. L. James Wendel, Jr., Dr. Mark Koenig, Dr. Mike Tyler, Dr. Angelo Canonico, David White, Gordon "Buddy" King, Terry Johnson past, present and retired employees of Occidental Chemical Company and special friends at Kroger Pharmacy.

The Roland family would like to give a special thanks to the Dan Rudy Cancer Center, Maury Regional Medical Center Radiation Department, the Columbia Oncology Group and the staff at NHC-Hillview Nursing Home.
