Billy Ray King, 77, of Columbia, passed away on April 11, 2020 at his residence.
He was born on March 28, 1943, in Maury County TN, to Ernest and Rachel Eddelmon King.
He lived his life as an example to others, had a servant’s heart, loved his family, friends, and most of all his Lord.
Billy was a retired firefighter, having worked for the Columbia Fire Department for 32 years. He started with the fire department in 1965 and retired as a driver/engineer in 1998. During his time with the fire department, he built a legacy of service and was instrumental in developing the emergency medical program, being the department’s first CPR instructor. In addition, he spent many hours working to update the street numbering system for Columbia and plot new streets. He was honored as the retiree of the year for CFD in 2015.
He was a long-time member, deacon, and served as the church’s clerk and treasurer (along with his wife) at Columbia Church of God of Prophecy for over 50 years.
Billy was known as the bow-tie wearing ambassador with the volunteers, at Maury Regional Medical Center, having volunteered for 7 years and 9 months and over 2300 hours. In 2019, he was honored with the Volunteers Service Champion Award which is presented annually to a volunteer at Maury Regional Medical. Visitors and staff were always met with a smile and offer of assistance at MRMC.
Due to the pandemic, a graveside service was held on April 15, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens. A memorial service to honor Billy Ray will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, with Lawrence Jackson officiating and others speaking.
Billy was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Delma Earlene Bolton, Rachel Eddelmon (mother), Ernest W. King (father), Brothers: Rayburn King, Ernest King Jr., and Richard King.
He is survived by his sons: Mark (Selena) King of Summertown, Michael (Misty) King of Columbia; grandchildren: Whitney (Mike) Hudson, John Michael King, Rachel King, and extended grandchildren; great granddaughter: Tatley Mae Hudson; sister: Betty Faye Rayl (Paul) and brothers: R.L. (Cecelia) King, Jimmy Carl (Shelia) King.
Pallbearers: Columbia Fire and Rescue Honor Guard.
