Bettye June Smith Russell of Columbia, Tennessee passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father at the Life Care Center in Columbia on Sunday, December 23, 2012, following a brief illness.
Born on November 24, 1928 in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Vernon Wayne Smith and Edna Johnson Smith. She was preceded in death in 1978 by her husband, William B. Russell, Sr., whom she married on March 5, 1949, and by her brother, Kenneth E. Smith and by dear friend, Robert Zseltsvay.
She is survived by her son, William B. Russell, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Carol, of Franklin, Tennessee and by her granddaughters, Katherine Lee Russell of Franklin and Jennifer Lynne Russell McCluskey, husband, Matt, and great-granddaughter, Ainsley Reagan McCluskey, of Baltic, Connecticut.
Ms. Russell was a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Spring Hill, and later attended St. Peters Episcopal Church in Columbia.
Ms. Russell graduated from Fayetteville Central High School in 1946 and became a legal secretary in Fayetteville. Upon her marriage, she moved to Columbia in 1949 where she worked for several law firms in Columbia and, later in Nashville, and as secretary for the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia. She later received certification as a paralegal and worked in that capacity with the law firm of Thomas W. Hardin in Columbia until her retirement in 1995. Over the years, Ms. Russell was active in several local organizations and as a volunteer at Maury Regional Hospital.
The family is very appreciative of the care and concern of her many kind friends and neighbors, her physician, Dr. Angela Joynes, and the other physicians who provided her care, and the staffs of Maury Regional Hospital, The Bridge and Life Care Center.
A memorial service for Ms. Russell will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 11AM at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 311 West 7th Street, in Columbia, Tennessee by the Reverend Richard Zalesak. The family will receive visitors in the parlor at St. Peters one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to St. Peters or Grace Episcopal Churches or to the American Lung or Heart Associations or the American Kidney Fund.
