Betty passed away gently with the people she loved and who loved her on September 3, 2018. A memorial service will be held for her at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2018. The family will visit with friends from 12:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. service. Interment will follow at McClain Cemetery.
Most of you know that Betty never met a stranger. Anyone who met her for even a short encounter would be given a life history and in return, she would want to know about you. Betty was born a people person and her heart was open with generosity when she saw a need. In this respect, she was well matched with her late husband Mack McClain; they were always taking meals to those who were sick or in need, and showing hospitality to people needing a place to stay for a while. Together, and each on their own, they made family out of strangers.
A business woman, she built her own beauty shop and worked in that profession until she discovered real estate on which she built her second career, selling homes and eventually owning rental properties. She loved to move and renovate homes - her children teased that the family to go on the Oprah Show for families that move a lot. Betty loved to sing in the First United Methodist Church choir - or the rare chance at karaoke. She sang like nobody was listening!
She is survived by her loving children: Sherry (Eric) Scheitel, Emily Trader, Jon (Missy) McClain, and the grandchildren: Zachary (Brittany) Scheitel, Windsor (Christina) Scheitel, Sam McClain, Julia McClain, Emily Katherine McClain, and Aurelia Trader. There are three great-grand children: Bane Scheitel, Zoey Scheitel, and Saylor Scheitel.
The youngest of seven, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mack McClain, two brothers (James and Joe Pollock), and four sisters (Mildred Sizemore, Marguerite Pollock, Sue Beatty, and Roma Turnbow).
Her life (and her family's) has also been blessed by her wonderful caregivers who loved her like a mother: Debbie Whitwell, Georgia McCaleb, and Mavis Daniels.
In lieu of flowers, you may honor Betty's memory with donations to the First United Methodist Church, 202 S Main St, Mt Pleasant, TN 38474 or with a contribution to the Mack and Betty McClain Memorial Scholarship Fund; Columbia State Community College; Attn: Foundation Office; 1665 Hampshire Pike; Columbia, TN 38401.
