Betty Jane Kelley

Mrs. Betty Jane Dodson Kelley, age 82, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at Maury Regional Medical Center on Sunday, November 30, 2014.

Betty, affectionately known as “Nanny” to many, was born on April 6, 1932 to Madison Campbell Dodson and Mattie Pearl Wright Dodson in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. She was one of eleven children born to them and the last one of her siblings to have passed away. Betty was a graduate of the 1950 class of Hay Long High School. The same year she graduated, she also became the wife of James “Jimmy” Kelley on May 20, 1950, and became a devoted homemaker. Jimmy passed away in 1988. She was a long-time member of New Song Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant and loved her church family very much.

She loved her family, and was a wonderful wife and mother. But when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, her love blossomed even more. In addition to her own children, “Nanny” babysat many children for her friends over the years and all the children loved her. Nanny also enjoyed reading for pleasure. She also was known to be opinionated and wasn’t shy about letting it be known to those around her.

Betty is survived by her children: Deborah Clark and Steve (Betty) Kelley; grandchildren: Kimberly (Bryant) Workman, Kerri Kelley, Kelley (Andrew) Scharrer and Cody Kelley; great-grandchildren: Bailey, Rielly and Abigail Workman, Jansen Woodard, Kaelyn Owens and Lily Scharrer; several nieces and nephews; special kids that she loved like grandchildren: Sam Boshers, Kelly Jo Boshers, Matt Boshers, and Kevin and Chelsea Hughes; and special friends: Melba Jacobs and Chuck Clark.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kelley will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Peter Sierson officiating. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday, December 2, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. A private family burial will follow at a later date in Polk Memorial Gardens.

Andrew Scharrer, Bryant Workman, Matthew Cline, Bailey Workman, Rielly Workman and Cody Kelley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Cline, Neil King, Danny Grooms, David Boyd, Matt Boshers, Sam Boshers, Kevin Hughes, Larry Peach, Kay Spears, Members from the Class of 1950 of Hay Long High School, Mrs. Kelley’s Sunday school class at New Song Baptist Church, Richard "Dicky" Thompson, and Employees of Discount Plumbing and Electric.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to New Song Baptist Church at 2585 Zion Rd, Columbia, TN 38401
