Bess Hill Summar

April 7, 1913 — October 17, 2004

Mrs. Bess Hill Summar, widow of the Rev. W. C. Summar and a resident of Columbia, died Sunday, October 17, 2004 at St. Thomas Hospital, after a short illness.

Funeral services for Mrs. Summar will be conducted Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at 11:00 am at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Dr. Carl Duck officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A native of Nashville, she was the daughter of the late J.J. and Bessie Mai Fottrell Hill. She was educated at Peabody College and Middle Tennessee State Teachers College. She received her Masters degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before her marriage, she taught school in Nashville. After her marriage, she and her husband served several Baptist churches in Tennessee, including Mt. Pleasant, Culleoka, Selmer, Franklin and Oak Ridge. She served for several years as Missionary Study Director of the Tennessee Baptist WMU. Mrs. Summar and her husband spent a year as missionaries in Malawi, Africa. She was a Sunday School teacher, president of the Tennessee Baptist Pastors? Wives, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a Regent of the Jane Knox DAR. Mrs. Summar toured most of the major countries of the world and was known for the many tours she conducted around the world. Her favorite country was China, which she visited 20 times during her life.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William C. Bill Summar, Jr. and Brenda Norman Summar of Columbia; two grandchildren, Joy Theresa Bernard Summar-Smith of Waco, TX and William Chandler Summar of Knoxville, TN; a sister-in-law, Clara Hill of Nashville; two nieces, Sara Beth Rodgers and Joann Kemp, both of Nashville.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
