Bennie Campbell, age 96, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Tennessee. Bennie was born January 19, 1926, in Grove Hill, Alabama to the late Clarence and Jessie Maude Walton Campbell.
There’s little doubt that Bennie lived a full life. He was born into a sharecropping family in rural Alabama and though they didn’t have much, they were able to depend on one another to make ends meet. Bennie was able to see the world through his time in the United States Navy and served the country honorably during World War II. Upon returning home, he worked for Shell Oil in the swampland of Louisiana and then for Cadillac Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan. After decades of service for Cadillac, he would retire to Columbia, Tennessee to be close to family and watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.
Bennie was an active man and continued to be independent until the very end. He was never afraid to share his opinion on a variety of matters. He enjoyed being around his family, working in his carpentry shop, watching westerns, and listening to country music.
Bennie is survived by his children: Bennie (Marilynn Sowell) Campbell, Cory (Carol) Campbell, James (Judy Ashburn) Campbell, Olivia (Dave) Bennett, Linda (Rusty) Campbell, Victor (Michelle) Campbell; grandchildren: Will Campbell, Seth Campbell, Claire Campbell, Caleb Campbell, Elizabeth Campbell, Shanan Campbell, Shae Campbell, Coury Bennett, Ben Campbell, Joshua Campbell, and Rachael Campbell Foley; great-grandchildren: Jude, Eli, Matilda Mae, Eleanor Dean, Hadley Ann, Kalysta, Bryan, Harper, and Joshua; great-great-grandchild: Aiden; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bennie is preceded in death by his wife: Elizabeth (Coury) Campbell; son: Gregory Campbell; siblings: Birdie Lee, Susie Mae, Lonnie, James, Mattie Bell, Robert, Edna, Jessie Bruce, Gerald, Arnold, Johnnie; and his K-9 companion: Jake.
Pallbearers are: James, Bennie, Cory, Caleb, Will, and Seth Campbell.
