Benjamin "Ben" Varela Jr.

Benedict “Ben” Varela, Jr., age 73, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022 in Columbia, Tennessee.
With many ancesters tying Ben to Spain, Ben was the first generation born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Benedict Varela, Sr. and Evelyn Hayeck Varela on December 19, 1947.
From a young age, Ben was very curious. Curious how things worked, how they were made, and their purpose; Ben’s brilliant mind was always up for the challenge. His desire for knowledge never ceased as he grew older, he was a lifetime learner.
Ben valued education and was always looking for new ways to expand his mind. Ben earned three Master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
Not only was Ben booksmart, but he was a self-taught hobby enthusiast. Determined to do whatever he set his mind to like, rebuilding cars and assembling computers.
Above all, Ben treasured his family and the memories they shared. Teaching his children about iconic music, like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and the Eagles to name a few and perfecting his famous red sauce for his loved ones to enjoy.
Ben’s charming good nature, warm heart, and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Melanie Waddell Varela, brother, Roy Varela; children: Joyce Gandy, Lynn Varela, Benedict Varela IV, Pamela Creamer, Kattie Duncan, Meghan Dickson; grandchildren: Calysta, Jason, Quin, Riley, Danina, Donald, Myles, Madilyn, and Maveryk; and great-grandchild: Margaret.
In addition to his parents, Ben is preceded in death by his stepson: Michael Blevins.
The family will be receiving friends and visitors at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at 10:00 AM, with a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 AM.
