Barbara “Barbee” Balloff Heilman died peacefully in her sleep embraced by family after a long battle with a rare form of cancer on April 21, 2019 on her beloved farm in Primm Springs, TN.
Barbee, the most beautiful of souls, was dearly loved by hundreds and hundreds of friends from all over the world. Born in La Follette, TN on May 13, 1947, she graduated from Kingswood Cranbrook High School in Bloomfield Hills, MI and Vanderbilt University in 1969. After a varied career, she and her husband Hap of 51 years, spent the last 28 years growing organic produce for some of the finest restaurants in Nashville. She and Hap traveled extensively and spent winters in Southeast Asia, especially Thailand and Burma.
Preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Janet Balloff, she is survived by her husband William “Hap” Heilman, daughter and son-in-law Appalachia “Apple” Martine and Corey Lashlee and grandson Silas Lashlee of Olympia, WA; son Zachary Heilman of Primm Springs, TN; daughter Kala Hildebrand of Asheville, NC; sister and brother-in-law Carol and Steve Abeles and uncle Sam Balloff of Knoxville, TN; aunt Eve Margolies of Brentwood, TN; brother-in-law Jim Heilman of Charlottesville, VA; and numerous relatives. Barbee was the most loving and kind person and that love was returned to her many times over during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in her name to your favorite environmental, humanitarian, or animal welfare causes would honor her legacy.
