"Apple" June Davis Cole Boaz

May 31, 1919 — April 16, 2013

“Apple” June Davis Cole Boaz, age 93, passed away on April 16, 2013 at NHC Columbia.

“Apple” June was the daughter of the late “J. E.” Joseph Edward Davis and the late Roberta Pearl Register Davis and was born in the Rockdale Hill community of Maury County on May 31, 1919. She was a graduate of Peabody College. She married Frances Cole, who preceded her in death, and raised their children in the same community she grew up in.

“Apple” June lived in the Mt. Pleasant community for most of her life and was a well-known educator in the area. She began her teaching career at Summertown School. At the time the school was located in a two-room school house and for several years she taught a combined class of 1st through 3rd graders. Later she taught the 4th – 6th grade group. She then taught school at Mt. Joy School where she eventually became the principle. In the early 1960’s “Apple” June began teaching at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School and she taught there until her retirement in 1985, the year her daughter Joan graduated from college herself. She loved art and teaching children art. Painting was her hobby.

“Apple” June also had an entrepreneurial spirit and ran a business with Mr. Cole, the father of her children for many years, while holding a full time job in the education field. They owned and operated the Mt. Pleasant laundry, which they opened in 1943. Later they changed the name of the business to J&T Laudrette in honor of their two daughters: Joan and Jana. In keeping with the changing times, she converted the laundry into a coin-operated facility in the late 1990’s and changed the name once again to Mt. Pleasant Laundrette.

Her children remember “Apple” June as a very independent woman and quite a character. She loved fun and once she was tagged with the nick-name “Apple” June by her grand-daugher, Jana she used her artistic talents to develop a special signature when signing her name in which she actually incorporated a drawing of an apple into her name.

Mrs. Boaz is survived by her daughter: Joan Cole (Thomas) Tozzini; grandchildren: Jana (Michael) Antrobus and Thomas (Kathryn) Tozzini; great-grandchildren: Andrew, Christopher and Brandon Antrobus.
In addition to her parents and the father of her children, Mrs. Boaz is preceded in death by her daughter: Jana Cole and her sister Eddina Davis Giles.
