Alvin Kimsey Seago, Jr.

March 9, 1940 — August 24, 2024

Columbia

Alvin Kimsey Seago Jr., lovingly called “Pops”, entered eternity on August 24, 2024, surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was born on March 9, 1940, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to the late Alvin K. Seago, Sr. and Marguerite May Seago.

Pops attended Louisiana College where he met his bride, Virginia Smith Seago. Upon graduating, they relocated to Fort Worth, Texas where he studied at Southwest Theological Seminary, earning a master’s degree in Music. Eventually settling in Walker, LA, he served as a minister of music for many years, ultimately retiring...twice. He worked bi-vocationally as a probation and parole officer for the state of Louisiana for nearly 20 years.

After relocating to Columbia, TN in 2003 to be near family, Pops worshipped at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. He was a man of faith, passionately sharing his relationship with Jesus. He served as a deacon and expressed great joy in that privilege. He deeply loved his church family.

He was the volunteer maintenance man for ten years at Agathos Classical School where many of his grandchildren attended. He was widely known and loved by both students and teachers.

He enjoyed competitive games of pool with his friends at the Senior Center and rarely missed a day at Harvey’s gym, invariably sporting an LSU, PHBC, or Agathos t-shirt and hat.

The Rocky Mountains and their beauty were special to Pops. He made sure his family experienced their grandeur through adventures in camping and backpacking, a legacy that continues even in his grandchildren.

He was a devoted husband to his late wife of nearly 60 years. His heart belonged to “Nana” and their family. His children and grandchildren were his everything and he took great pride in each one. He beamed at the sight of his two great-granddaughters and was extra joyful when he saw them.

His heritage of strong faith, devotion, love, and spirit of adventure will forever be remembered and treasured.

Pops never met a stranger. He took every opportunity to pray for a need.

Alvin Kimsey Seago, Jr. is survived by his daughter, Kimberly and husband, Dr. Tristan Denley of Baton Rouge, LA; his son, Dr. Mark Seago and wife, Tina of Columbia, TN; grandchildren, Emma Denley Groppe (Josh), Chloë Denley, Andrew Seago (Maddie), Ethan Seago, Ella Seago Maldonado (Collin), Liam Seago, Emre Seago, Libby Seago, and Whitt Seago; great grandchildren, Faye Groppe and Elanor Seago; cherished sisters, Ellen Adair of Phoenix, AZ and Pat Bozeman (Tommy) of Austin, TX, and many other family members and friends that he held dear.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife and youngest son, John Alvin Seago.

A community service will be held Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 am at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church, Columbia, TN to celebrate and honor Pops.
