Mr. Allbie O'Neal Sharpton, 82, a resident of South Main Street, Columbia, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Maury Regional Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Sharpton will be conducted Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Williams Columbia Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Robertson, Donald Paul, Rev. Gene Shelton and Rev. Telford Tharp officiating. Entombment will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with military honors being provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post # 19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Lawrence County native was the son of the Late William Grant and Della Currie Sharpton and husband of the Late Ona Wells Sharpton. He was a retired insurance agent with Davis and Sharpton Agency, he was Vice President of WXRQ Radio Station in Mt. Pleasant for 14 years, and he was previously employed with Ozment Bakery & Taystee Bread and Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. Mr. Sharpton served in World War II with the Coast Guard. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Columbia and a life member of Herbert Griffin Post #19 of the American Legion, D.A.V., and a Gideon and a member of the Heart to Heart Club at Maury Regional Hospital.
He is survived by one brother; Ocial Sharpton of Columbia, one niece; Janice Elliott of Nashville, and three nephews; David Sharpton, Al Sharpton and Mike Sharpton all of Columbia.
He was preceded in death by one brother; Edsel Sharpton.
Pallbearers will be Eddy Spencer, Monty Gilliam, Steve Patterson, William Bill Sargent, Billy Ray King, Columbus Street, David Hill and Kenneth Pitts. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Bryant, Kenny Hay, Ernest Matthews, Wayne Hickman, Wade Matheny, Edward Holton, Joe Foster, Cam Anderson, Rodney Boles, Tom Moore, Terry Hayes, Arch Patterson, Wayne Patterson, Mike Patterson, Tom Jennings, John Moore, Gary Redding, W.C. "Bungle" West and the late Alfred McCandless.
Memorials may be made to the Dwight Sharpton Memorial Scholarship Fund at Craft Memorial United Methodist Church.
