Mr. Albert Fisher Oakes, Jr., 83, a resident of Rolling Fields Drive, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Life Care Center.
Funeral services for Mr. Oakes will be conducted Monday, May 27, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Columbia with Paul Bane officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Williams Columbia Funeral Home.
The Maury County native was the son of the late
Albert Fisher, Sr. and Marguerite Page Oakes. He was the husband of the late Jane Peyton Oakes who died in 1991. He was a 1937 graduate of Central High School. He attended Baylor School in Chattanooga where he was known as an outstanding football player. He attended Vanderbilt University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi National Social Fraternity. He was a partner in the former Oakes Furniture Manufacturing Company and retired as Account Executive of Brown and Bigelow, Incorporated out of St. Paul, Minnesota. He was active in many civic affairs including, Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia and the Graymere Country Club, Past Director of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, and the Maury County Historical Society. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Thirteenth Air Force in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.
Survivors include a son, Albert Fisher "Buddy" Oakes, III of Franklin, TN; 2 grandsons, Albert Fisher Oakes, IV and Jackson Clark Oakes of Franklin, TN; a sister, Mrs. Jane Page Trice of Columbia; a brother, John W. "Jack" Lavonne Oakes of Columbia; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Patrick J. Harlan, Jim Criswell, Joe C. Foster, David Greenfield, Bobby Harris, Steve Harris, Jerry Quinlisk, and Dwaine Beck. Honorary pallbearers will be E.H. Frakes, Jr., Felix W. Truss, Charles R. Wolff, Jr., W.D. Wilsford, Jr., John David Oakes, William V. Chaffin, Stanley Norris, S.O. Thomas, Jr., Dr. Tom K. Young, Bill Rainey, T. Edward Lawwell, Page Chamberlain, Cannon Mayes, James F. "Tut" Frakes, W. Cary Pulliam, Jr., Edward A. Cox, Dr. Harold Pryor, Ernest Allen, Jim & Barbara Sproul, Cal Kibbons, James Burt, Bill Turner, Members of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia and the 1937 Class of Central High School.
